BRAZIL
Brazil with a population of almost 200 million and a third of the land mass is South America’s most important country. For many years Brazil was spoken of as the “Land of the Future”. Its population has many ethnic strands: Portuguese colonists, local Amerindians, descendants of slaves and waves of immigrants from Europe. During the last fifteen years Brazil has moved to economic and political maturity. The election of the leftist Lula da Silva in 2002 disturbed many but he has ruled sensibly on sound economic principles.
Economic activity is expanding. This is at a quicker-than-expected pace, as robust domestic demand is complementing the export boom prompted by the strong global economy, particularly enhanced by China’s demand for Brazil’s exports. However, rising inflation, resulting from the strong pace of economic expansion, has prompted the Central Bank to tighten monetary policy, which is starting to slow down the current economic rebound.
Brazilian exports to the United Kingdom are diversified, with meat and other raw materials and semi-manufactured products figuring as important items. Brazilian imports from the United Kingdom are predominantly capital goods.
While an economy which must be treated with caution we would encourage exporters to consider this country once again.
